Welcome!

I started this one name study as an offshoot of my family history research when I discovered that there were only 42 entries in the 1901 census with my grandmother's maiden name of Cullender, 59 for Collender (the name her father was registered with) and a further 21 with other spelling variations. As a category C member of the Guild of One Name Studies I am now committed to collecting and cataloguing all occurrences of the names worldwide, including all variants except for those beginning with Ca or K. Read what I've found so far by clicking on the links at the top of the page.

What's in a name?

I haven't come across definitions of any of the spellings I am researching, but there are two for Calender. The most common meaning is someone who calenders cloth, a calender being a machine something like a mangle for smoothing the creases out of cloth; the other suggestion is that it is someone who lists documents. The majority of the early Cullenders and Collenders that I have come across so far were mariners - perhaps they had leaky boats? I've also noticed that the 1880 US census had quite a few Kollenders and Kullenders from Sweden, Germany and Switzerland, so perhaps the name originated in that part of Europe. Or maybe they came from the small town in Scotland called Callender? If anyone has any more precise information about the origin of the name, or even some more speculations, please forward them on to me.
